Cooley Elects Eight New Partners

Palo Alto, Calif. – December 8, 2009 – Cooley Godward Kronish LLP announced today that it has elected eight attorneys to join the Firm's partnership, effective
January 1, 2010.

"Not only have they proven themselves to be invaluable resources for their clients, but they have demonstrated the leadership and commitment to their colleagues and to the firm that is vital in maintaining a strong institution." 
 
The new partners are:

Jeffrey L. Cohen (Bankruptcy – New York).  Mr. Cohen's practice is concentrated in the area of Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization and related litigation. He frequently represents creditors' committees and debtors in chapter 11 cases, as well as fee committees, purchasers of assets, parties to executory contracts and individual secured and unsecured creditors.  Mr. Cohen has served as counsel to the creditors' committee in several of the most prominent retail chapter 11 cases in the country including, but not limited to, The Bombay Company, Lenox China, Filene's Basement, Goody's Family Clothing and Levitz Furniture.  Mr. Cohen currently serves as debtor's counsel to Crabtree & Evelyn in its reorganization efforts.   Mr. Cohen earned his J.D., cum laude, from the St. John's University School of Law.

Charles S. Kim (Business – San Diego).  Mr. Kim specializes in representing issuers, investment banking firms and venture capital firms in public offerings and private placements of equity and debt securities.  Mr. Kim's practice also includes representation in general corporate and securities law related matters, and in a wide range of other transactions.   Mr. Kim earned his J.D. from the New York University School of Law, where he was named a McKay Scholar. He also holds a M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary, where he graduated in the top 1% of his class. 

John S. Kyle (Intellectual Property Litigation – San Diego). Mr. Kyle's practice encompasses intellectual property litigation and business litigation.   His practice has particular emphasis on patent litigation in the mechanical arts and in wireless telecommunications.   He was named one of San Diego's top IP litigators by the San Diego Daily Transcript.  Mr. Kyle earned his J.D. from the University of San Diego, where he was Chairman of the Appellate Moot Court Board and was admitted to The Order of Barristers.

Audrey K. Scott (Estate Planning and Personal Representation – San Francisco). Ms. Scott's practice focuses on estate planning, estate and gift taxation and trust administration.  Her practice encompasses personal planning for matters including premarital agreements, incapacity and charitable giving. Ms. Scott also forms philanthropic entities, including public charities and private foundations.  She earned a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law.

Ian R. Shapiro (Litigation – New York). Mr. Shapiro represents plaintiffs and defendants in civil litigation, including complex commercial litigation, securities litigation, intellectual property litigation, and real estate disputes.  He also represents individuals and corporations in criminal matters and SEC investigations.  Before joining Cooley, he clerked for the Honorable Michael B. Mukasey, the chief judge of the Southern District of New York; and before law school, he was the Chief of Staff of the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation.  He earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School, where he was an editor of the Harvard Law Review. 

Jordan A. Silber (Venture Capital – San Francisco). Mr. Silber focuses his practice on the formation and representation of investment funds, including venture capital, buy-out, hedge funds and funds-of-funds. He has formed and regularly advises a substantial number of international funds, with a particular emphasis on funds with investment activities and operations in China and India. Mr. Silber currently advises over 15 fund managers active in these regions, and in 2007-09 acted as lead fund counsel in the closing of more than $2.8 billion in Asian fund interests. He earned his J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law and his M.B.A. from the University of Texas, Austin.

Colleen Gillis Snow (Real Estate – Reston, Va.). Ms. Gillis Snow focuses her practice on land use and zoning matters in the vibrant Northern Virginia area.  She represents major developers and national, regional, and local companies in all areas of land use, including office, retail, industrial, mixed-use, residential, entertainment, hotel, and large planned communities.  As a complement to her land use practice, she has extensive experience in the financing, sale, acquisition and leasing of commercial real estate properties, representing institutional and regional lenders, developers, office building and shopping center landlords, and assisted living facilities.  She earned her J.D. from the University of Richmond School of Law.

Peter H. Werner (Business – San Francisco). Mr. Werner's practice focuses on the representation of private and public emerging technology companies, venture capital firms, private equity firms and investment banks. Mr. Werner assists clients with entity formation, organization and governance matters, financings and other securities transactions, mergers and acquisitions, and SEC and stock exchange compliance and reporting. He earned his J.D., with honors, from the University of Chicago Law School, where he was a John M. Olin Law and Economics Fellow.
