Cooley Appoints New Leadership in New York
New York – April 13, 2023 – Cooley has appointed Ian Shapiro as the new partner in charge of the firm’s New York office.
Shapiro joined Cooley in 2003 and is a member of the board of directors. He represents individuals and companies in complicated and hard-fought commercial disputes in state and federal courts and arbitrations throughout the US. A veteran litigator and firm leader, Ian has represented every type of company in nearly every type of case and has extensive experience representing technology sector clients.
“Through his long-standing career as a litigator and in government positions, Ian brings a vast wealth of leadership experience to his new role,” said Mike Attanasio, chair of Cooley’s global litigation department. “During his two decades at Cooley, Ian has continually demonstrated his passion for the firm and the New York office, and we are confident he is the perfect person to further strengthen Cooley’s profile and brand in the New York market.”
Beyond his 20 years with the firm, Shapiro spent several years in the New York City government working for the mayor’s office, the City Council and as chief of staff of a city agency. He was one of Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s appointees to the Panel for Educational Policy, the successor to the New York City Board of Education. Shapiro also is a member of the New York Supreme Court’s Commercial Division Advisory Council.
“I have been part of Cooley’s New York office since its inception. Cooley came to New York to represent innovative and high-growth companies, and I could not be more proud of the practice we have developed, as these companies have flourished and the firm alongside them,” said Shapiro. “I am honored to lead the group of lawyers we have assembled in New York as we continue to serve this market.”
Cooley’s New York office has experienced tremendous growth since relocating to 55 Hudson Yards in 2019, and it is now the firm’s largest office by head count.
