Cooley Recognized Among Law360’s California Powerhouses
Palo Alto – August 25, 2023 – Cooley was named among Law360’s California Powerhouse law firms in the publication’s annual series identifying firms handling the biggest deals and highest-profile courtroom battles, as well as making a lasting impact on the law at the state and local level.
Cooley’s inclusion on the prestigious list of six California firms was noted in the context of the firm’s “focus on California’s most disruptive industries – including technology, life sciences, media, consumer goods and service sectors – by representing some of those industries’ biggest players.”
Peter Werner, the partner in charge of Cooley’s San Francisco office, was interviewed for the article, in which he noted that the “entire firm has been built on the basis of representing … companies as they move from just a formation and maybe a seed financing to a big, international, multi-industry, sprawling organization. We are intentionally built to service all of their needs as they go into new markets.”
Law360 focused on Cooley’s array of transactional work in getting multibillion-dollar life sciences mergers across the finish line, such as San Diego-based Turning Point Therapeutics in its $4.1 billion sale to global biopharmaceutical company Bristol Myers Squibb. Additionally, the publication noted Cooley’s representation of the digital health company One Medical in its $3.9 billion sale to Amazon, as well as its representation of Lux Capital on the closing of the early-stage-focused $1.1 billion Lux Ventures VIII fund, which is Lux’s single largest fund to date.
In litigation matters, Law360 characterized Cooley as having “dominated the technology, finance and media practice areas this past year.” The publication noted Cooley’s “flashiest win,” in a two-week trial involving a “successful defense of Kim and Khloé Kardashian and Kris and Kylie Jenner against defamation and intentional interference claims brought by fellow reality TV star Blac Chyna, who sought more than $100 million in damages.”
Michael Attanasio, chair of Cooley’s global litigation department, was interviewed for the Law360 article. He described representing the Kardashians as a “nice match with Cooley’s practice,” noting how the family has branched out from reality TV into “women-led, entrepreneurial business conglomerates featuring a whole host of technology and influence and social media.”
Law360 also praised Cooley for its success securing a win “just months after blockchain platform Dfinity Foundation sued Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta Platforms Inc. for trademark infringement, claiming the tech giant and Cooley client ripped off their infinity-loop logo. At the pleadings stage, Cooley litigators convinced a California federal judge to dismiss the claims against Meta.”
Law360 additionally lauded the firm for an appellate victory in the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit affirming the summary judgment dismissal of a class action brought in relation to Google’s Local Guides program.
Attanasio noted that the dismissal “was an important win for us" and “an important decision by the Ninth Circuit,” given the size of the putative class action.
