Daily Journal Recognizes Four Cooley Partners as Top IP Lawyers

August 19, 2016

Palo Alto – August 19, 2016 – The Daily Journal named partners Bobby Ghajar, Mika Mayer, Michael Rhodes and Nan Wu to its list of the top intellectual property attorneys in California. Cooley is a top-five law firm by number of leading IP lawyers recognized.

The publication highlighted Ghajar, who recently joined Cooley's Los Angeles office, as "one of two headlining acquisitions for Cooley this year" and noted his successful defense of Cooley client Oculus VR in a major trademark case. Ghajar collaborated with a Cooley team – led by Rhodes – that prevailed on summary judgment just a few days before trial. Law360 highlighted the case as one of the year's most important trademark cases.

Palo Alto-based partner Mika Reiner Mayer, who also recently arrived at Cooley, was singled out for her "phenomenal" IP due diligence work. Having co-founded the first practice group dedicated to performing IP due diligence at her previous firm, Mayer has performed hundreds of due diligence reviews across a wide range of life sciences industries and deal sizes. Indeed, Mayer noted that she has "done more IP due diligence than any other lawyer around." This is Mayer's fourth consecutive year being honored on the list.

Rhodes, one of Cooley's most prominent litigators, was highlighted for his close working relationship with major Cooley clients King.com, Oculus VR and Facebook. Rhodes, based in San Francisco, is a four-time honoree on this list. In the Daily Journal feature, he attributes his litigation success to his Cooley colleagues: "Litigation, and IP litigation in particular, is a team sport. I'm given way too much credit for our wins."

Wu's work advising Abaxis on out-licensing strategies to boost its patent status was highlighted by the Daily Journal, which noted that this has "translated into millions of dollars of royalty revenue for Abaxis." Wu, who is based in San Francisco, is a five-time honoree on the list. "The legal world is full of uncertainty," Wu said. "There's always risk; it's how to manage that. It's teamwork between the business team and the legal team."
