Cooley Continues Climb in US and Global M&A and Private Equity Rankings
Palo Alto, CA – January 6, 2023 – With nearly $40 billion in deal volume during the fourth quarter of 2022 and over $176 billion in deal volume for the year, Cooley’s M&A practice earned the firm top recognitions on the Bloomberg, Mergermarket and Refinitiv regional and global year-end M&A and private equity league tables. The practice, led by co-chairs Barbara Borden and Jamie Leigh, continues to lead in public and private transactions despite the volatility of the current mergers & acquisitions market.
Cooley earned top recognitions from major legal rankings, most notably:
- By Bloomberg, which ranked the firm second on global- and US-announced deals by M&A deal count, as well as second on UK-announced deals and fifth on Europe-announced deals by M&A deal count.
- By Mergermarket, which ranked the firm third on its US league table by deal count and fifth on its global league table by deal count, as well as second on US private equity buyouts and third on global private equity buyouts by deal count.
- By Refinitiv, which placed the firm among the top five for US-announced and US target completed deals.
In all areas noted above, the firm’s rankings improved relative to 2021, and the firm was noted in the top five for deals with US involvement by all three publications.
To support these rankings, Cooley handled deals across a variety of industries while maintaining its top position in technology and life sciences by working on several market-leading transactions, including Horizon Therapeutics’ $28 billion sale to Amgen, Insurance Auto Auctions’ $7.3 billion sale to Ritchie Bros., Apollo Endosurgery’s $615 million sale to Boston Scientific, Oyster Point Pharma’s sale to Viatris, Tmunity Therapeutics’ sale to Kite and the merger of Welsbach Technology Metals Acquisition Corp. with WaveTech Group.
Cooley’s world-class transactional team has worked on 1,600+ M&A deals for an aggregate value of more than $760 billion since 2018 and has guided top companies and private equity sponsors in some of the market’s largest and most complex transactions. The 180+ member M&A group spans 18 major business and technology centers in the US, Asia and Europe and represents all categories of participants in transactions.
