About Dena

Dena Chen is a seasoned patent litigator. She has successfully defended clients in all stages of litigation, including winning a rare post-trial motion to overturn a jury verdict. Dena has experience with a wide array of technologies such as video game hardware, augmented reality mobile games, computer software, artificial intelligence, semiconductor chips and medical devices.

Dena’s expertise extends to all aspects of litigation, including trials and Federal Circuit appeals. She has managed billion-dollar cases, as well as matters for emerging technology companies in the Silicon Valley.  Her successes include arguing key dispositive motions, winning early motions to dismiss and obtaining favorable affirmances on appeal. She is known for her pragmatic and efficient approach to litigation.

Dena has experience representing clients in venues throughout the country, including California, Delaware, New York, Florida, Texas and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office and the International Trade Commission.

Dena regularly serves on Cooley’s Summer Associate Committee and contributes to Cooley’s Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives. Dena was also Cooley’s 2020 Leadership Council on Legal Diversity Pathfinder. 

Dena initially joined Cooley in 2012 and then rejoined in 2015 following an eighteen-month clerkship with the Honorable William Alsup in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California.

At Berkeley Law, Dena participated in the Samuelson Law, Technology Public Policy Clinic, the Giles Sutherland Rich Memorial Moot Court Competition and the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. She also completed a summer externship with the Honorable Maxine M. Chesney in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California.

During her undergraduate studies at UC Berkeley, Dena worked for the Stanford Intellectual Property Litigation Clearinghouse (now known as Lex Machina, LexisNexis).
