About Kimberly
Dr. Kimberly Bolin focuses her practice on patent counseling, prosecution, and diligence for a wide variety of life science and chemistry clients. With a unique combination of technical knowledge and decades of practical experience creatively managing portfolios, Kimberly's insights on patent matters are unparalleled. She has deep experience in helping clients protect small molecule pharmaceuticals and large molecule conjugates, from composition of matter onwards, through creative life cycle management strategies.
Kimberly represents both mature and emerging companies alike. She also has vast experience in all aspects of Patent Term Extension strategy, including pre-filing pressure testing for patent selection and PTE application filings, Orange Book patent listing strategies, as well as both client-side and investor-side due diligence.
Kimberly is the first patent agent to serve on Cooley’s firm wide Patent Best Practices Committee and is deeply engaged in the Cooley Patent Education Program.
Prior to joining Cooley, Kimberly was a senior patent agent for 17 years at Morrison & Foerster, working closely with her mentors Dr. Gladys Monroy and Tom Ciotti on all aspects of patent prosecution and counseling, IP diligence and arbitration. During her tenure at Morrison & Foerster, she worked closely with clients such as Sanofi, Gilead Sciences, Genzyme, CoMentis, Cerus Corporation, Alchemia, University of Pittsburgh, Hisamitsu and the Children’s Hospital of Oakland Research Institute (CHORI), as well as serving as US patent counsel for numerous foreign patent law firms on behalf of their clients.
Prior to becoming a patent agent, Kimberly was a post-doctoral researcher in the lab of Dr. Glenn Millhauser at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She obtained her doctorate from the University of Oxford, UK under the supervision of Dr. Christopher Dobson, FRS, formerly Humphrey Plummer Professor of Chemical and Structural Biology in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Cambridge and Master of St. John’s College, Cambridge. Dr. Dobson was a pioneer in the area of protein folding and mis-folding, taking a multidisciplinary approach to unlock the molecular interactions that contribute to the protein mis-folding which underlies many disease states.
