Mark Westwood

Mark focuses his practice on patent prosecution, counseling and diligence for a variety of chemical and life sciences companies. His multidisciplinary background in chemistry enables him to effectively represent clients across a diverse range of technologies.

Mark received his JD from Stanford Law School, where he was awarded the Gerald Gunther Prize for outstanding performance in both Intellectual Property: Patents and Intellectual Property: International and Comparative Copyright Law, as well as the John Hart Ely Prize for outstanding performance in Intellectual Property: The Business and Law of Technology and Patent Licensing. During law school, Mark worked in the Juelsgaard Intellectual Property and Innovation Clinic, participated in the Stanford Intellectual Property Association and volunteered for the Tax Pro Bono Project. He was a two-summer participant in Cooley’s patent summer program.

Before law school, Mark was a patent agent at a boutique intellectual property firm in Houston, Texas, where he prepared and prosecuted patents for an array of domestic and international clients.

Mark earned his doctorate at the University of Chicago, where he worked under professor Michael D. Hopkins. Mark’s multidisciplinary doctoral research focused on the synthesis of novel molecular catalysts and the development of photocatalytic systems for renewable fuel production. While at the University of Chicago, Mark was awarded the McCormick Fellowship for academic achievement and the Gerhard Closs Teaching Award in Organic Chemistry. Mark is originally from Herefordshire, United Kingdom, and earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Oxford, where he synthesized novel magnetic materials for professor Peter D. Battle.
