About Ryan
Ryan is a litigator representing clients in a wide variety of matters – including complex civil litigation, cybersecurity and white-collar issues. Ryan has tried cases to verdict in state and federal courts and litigated in courts across the US.
Before joining Cooley, Ryan was a trial lawyer for the City and County of San Francisco (CCSF) Office of the City Attorney, where he defended the CCSF and its employees in tort and civil rights litigation in state and federal courts. In that capacity, Ryan tried cases to favorable jury verdicts (including multiple complete defense verdicts), argued numerous dispositive motions in state and federal courts – including two successful summary judgments recognized by the Daily Journal as “top defense verdicts” – and negotiated dozens of settlements. Ryan also successfully defended multiple cases on appeal to the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the California Courts of Appeal.
Ryan’s notable representations at Cooley include:
- Representing an online education company in securing a preliminary injunction and temporary restraining order, allowing the company to seize an internet domain hosting stolen content obtained by cybercriminals
- Representing a car-sharing company against unfair competition claims and regulatory challenges in litigation filed by a major airport
- Representing a public company in an insider trading investigation conducted by a US attorney’s office
- Representing a semiconductor equipment manufacturer against breach of contract claims arising from a supplier dispute
- Advising a data storage company on potential legal remedies in response to a data breach
Ryan began his career as an associate at a prominent business litigation firm in San Francisco, where he focused on mass tort litigation and white-collar investigations. While at UC Hastings, Ryan served as a judicial extern to Judge John A. Mendez of the US District Court for the Eastern District of California. Ryan also was a senior articles editor for the Hastings Law Journal. At Boston College, he was a member of the men’s water polo team.
