About Sam

Sam’s practice focuses on business restructuring, including complex Chapter 11 bankruptcy cases, adversary proceedings and out-of-court transactions. He has represented debtors, lenders, official committees, sponsors, asset purchasers and other stakeholders in a variety of distressed scenarios. Sam’s experience spans a broad range of industries, including senior living, financial services, life settlement and hospitality.

Before joining Cooley, Sam was an associate in the restructuring group at Mayer Brown. From 2019 to 2020, he served as a judicial law clerk to Judge Donald R. Cassling of the US Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

During law school, Sam was a member of the University of Illinois Law Review, won “Best Oralist” at the 2019 American College of Bankruptcy’s Seventh Circuit Regional Moot Court competition, and received the Paul M. Lisnek Excellence in Trial Advocacy Award. As an undergraduate, Sam served as executive editor of The New Hampshire, the University of New Hampshire’s student-run newspaper.

  • The official committee of unsecured creditors in the Chapter 11 case of Amsterdam House Continuing Care Retirement Community (d/b/a The Harborside) – a continuing care retirement community in Port Washington, New York (US Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of New York)
  • The trustee for the post-confirmation liquidating trust in the Chapter 11 case of the Henry Ford Village – a continuing care retirement community in Dearborn, Michigan (US Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Michigan)
  • The sponsor in the Chapter 11 case of Evangelical Retirement Homes of Greater Chicago (d/b/a Friendship Village of Schaumburg) – a continuing care retirement community in Schaumburg, Illinois (US Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois)
  • The sole member and manager in the Chapter 11 case and related adversary proceeding of Northwest Senior Housing Corporation (d/b/a Edgemere) – a continuing care retirement community in Dallas, Texas (US Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Texas)
  • GWG Holdings, a publicly traded life settlements and alternative investments company, and certain of its subsidiaries as debtors’ counsel in Chapter 11 cases (US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas)*
  • The administrative agent and largest lender under the $500 million syndicated multilender pre-petition revolving credit facility to Brazos Electric Power Cooperative in its Chapter 11 case (US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas)*
  • The asset purchaser in the Mercy Hospital Chapter 11 case (US Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois)*
  • An individual creditor in the Chapter 11 cases of LATAM Airlines Group S.A., et al. (US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York)*
