About Sam
Sam represents clients in patent, trade secret, copyright and other commercial disputes, with a focus on cases involving complex software, firmware, semiconductor, wireless, computer and electronic technologies.
Sam joined Cooley after judicial clerkships with Judge Raymond Chen of the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and Chief Judge Leonard Stark of the US District Court for the District of Delaware. He has represented clients at all phases of litigation in the Federal Circuit, US district courts, the US Patent and Trademark Office, Section 337 investigations before the International Trade Commission and international arbitrations. Sam frequently represents clients in high-stakes disputes involving direct competitors, where he combines his knowledge of intellectual property law with an ability to dissect and understand complex technologies.
Before attending law school, Sam worked as an engineer at HP, where he developed software and firmware for HP products. Sam leverages his technical background to quickly identify key areas of focus when developing invalidity and noninfringement positions, in addition to broader strategies for discovery and trial. He is particularly experienced working with technical experts to analyze source code, perform product teardowns and analyses, assist with the preparation of expert reports and prepare experts to testify at depositions and trial.
Sam also has represented clients in a variety of pro bono matters, with a focus on veterans’ appeals to the US Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims.
He is fluent in Spanish.
