About Scott
Scott Talbot is an accomplished patent partner focused on counseling innovative clients on intellectual property issues, particularly on patent-related matters. His experience spans all aspects of patent law, including patent procurement, licensing, enforcement, transactional support, and technology transfers.
Scott has more than two decades of experience in the medical technology industry, including medical devices, diagnostics, and digital health. Representative technologies with which he has significant experience include prosthetic heart valves, heart valve repair, tissue ablation, neural stimulation, tissue engineering, drug delivery, orthopedic surgery, stents, blood pumps, TETS, robotic and image guided surgery, robotic prostheses / orthoses, radiation treatment, imaging, bariatric surgery, pelvic floor reconstruction, flow cytometry, PCR, bioinformatics, and electronic prescriptions. His work in this industry has included countless IP diligence evaluations in the contexts of IPOs, strategic acquisitions and investments, joint ventures, and venture financings, representing issuers, underwriters, investors, acquirers, and target / portfolio companies.
Scott also has significant experience across the clean technologies field, including wind turbines (blades and generators), grid-scale storage (compressed air and flow battery), smart grids, power line communications (remote meter reading and broadband data), solar, water turbines, geothermal, carbon credit generation, solid waste processing and fuel generation, and air and water pollution control / remediation. His experience also spans across a broad spectrum of other technologies, including aerospace and aviation, a variety of automotive technologies, computer software, digital rights management, glass fiber manufacturing, toys and juvenile products, and consumer products.
Scott is ranked as one of the top lawyers in the United States for patent prosecution by Legal 500. He is also recognized for his patent work by several other leading legal publications, including Chambers USA, Managing IP and IAM Patent 1000. In the latest edition of Chambers, clients refer to Scott as “world-class” and “forward-thinking,” stating that he is "a great asset and essential to creating and maintaining value for our company. His advice is practical and commercially oriented." In addition, Scott is an elected member of the Fellows of the American Bar Foundation, a global honorary society of attorneys, judges, law faculty and legal scholars.
In 1981, Scott received a BS in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science. He worked as a design engineer in the solid propellant rocket motor industry for three years before attending law school at the University of Virginia, where he received a JD in 1987.
Scott began his legal career as a corporate attorney in the Washington, DC office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher and also practiced patent law in the Washington, DC offices of Kenyon & Kenyon, Howrey & Simon and Morgan, Lewis & Bockius.
