About Sumiyya
Sumiyya focuses mainly on business litigation, including product regulation, commercial litigation and life sciences IP litigation. Before joining Cooley, Sumiyya gained paralegal experience working in civil litigation, conveyancing and family law.
Sumiyya assists with case management through document review, pleadings, case disclosure, case research and preparation for trial and has familiarity with product recall management, notifying multiple jurisdictions and assisting with horizon spotting exercises – namely, helping to research upcoming changes in the law and the impacts those changes may have on clients and their products. In addition, she also has experience in IP law through drafting IP searches and conducting general research.
As a member of the firm’s pro bono committee, Sumiyya regularly assists with legal and nonlegal aspects of Cooley’s pro bono work by organising volunteer programmes and charity fundraisers.
Sumiyya is one of three co-chairs sitting on the firmwide Black Business Professionals Affinity Group, which serves as a safe, open space for Cooley’s Black business professionals to connect, celebrate successes, build relationships, and discuss the unique challenges faced within the community and the legal profession. She was also co-chair of the inaugural London staff committee, acting as a liaison for the London staff with any issues they had and relaying the information to necessary management.
