The CLE Speaker Series is a legal education program focused on a variety of newsworthy business and litigation topics. Specialty credits in the areas of competence, elimination of bias, ethics and implicit bias also will be offered.
Substance Use Disorders and Mental Health: Resources for Lawyers to Seek Help, Reduce Stigma and Show Support
As reflected in the substance use disorders and mental health challenges in law practice, many lawyers are struggling. Stigma is a significant barrier to seeking treatment and sustained recovery. In this session, participants learned to:
- Identify substance use and mental health impairment in the legal workplace.
- Understand how stigma is a barrier to lawyers seeking help.
- Develop strategies to reduce stigma to seeking help/recovery, including the American Bar Association’s Well-Being Pledge Campaign.
- Find ways to seek support during treatment and recovery, including the Lawyer Assistance Program (LAP).
- Understand the ethical obligations when working with impaired lawyers.
